My husband Valdis keeps notebooks whose contents are not historical. He writes accounts of machines which do not exist and institutions which, he says, do.
He laughs while writing official histories and becomes serious while writing jokes.
He has accused three colleagues, two neighbours and one Polish writer he has not met of stealing ideas from him.
I do not know whether these activities are political. I know only that they are exhausting.
