Artificial Justice

Artificial Justice investigates a near-future legal culture in which algorithmic decision systems are promoted not as cheaper substitutes for judges, but as fairer ones.

Our scenarios concern mundane institutional decisions: sentencing recommendations, family-court schedules, appeals, eligibility and the allocation of limited legal resources. The systems promise consistency, freedom from fatigue and the elimination of unconscious bias.

The research focuses on the persuasive force of those promises. Through speculative services and institutional artefacts, participants encounter artificial justice as it might actually be sold: calm, bright, evidence-led and reassuring. The question is not whether algorithms are sinister. It is what kinds of judgement become difficult to defend once consistency itself is treated as fairness.
