Senate Approves Algorithmic Governance Trial
Appeals and mitigating circumstances included in first phase
The Centre has begun a six-month speculative governance trial exploring how universities might justify automated institutional decisions.
The prototype system considers fictional cases involving extensions, mitigating circumstances, academic integrity and appeals. It is deliberately presented using the language institutions already use for procedural fairness: consistency, transparency, timeliness and freedom from individual bias.
No real student decisions are being made. The trial is designed to make the proposition discussable before such systems become mundane. Workshops will compare machine consistency with the awkward, contextual and sometimes contradictory qualities of human judgement.
